‘The Bridport Story’ Rope and Net, Hemp and Flax

Bridport Heritage Forum as part of Bridport Season of Heritage, present an exhibition ‘The Bridport Story’ Rope and Net, Hemp and Flax, held at Bridport Town Hall, daily 10.00am – 4.00pm, except Sunday.

This new exhibition shows aspects of the history of the Industry in and around Bridport. The Court Works, North Mills, Pymore and Burton Bradstock show the transition from cottage industry to factory and the rise of the Gundry, Edwards and Hounsell families. Village boards include Symondsbury, Bradpole, Chideock, Whitchurch Canonicorum, Walditch, Bothenhampton and Stoke Abbott showing the various roles the villages played in the industry, from the growing of the hemp and flax, to the processing and working as ‘out workers’ for the factories. The various stages of the process in the making rope, net, sailcloth and twine will be explained. The exhibition is staged by the Bridport Heritage Forum as part of the Bridport Season of Heritage.
