What’s New in Dorset’s Local History 2016

Posted in DHN Events, and News

This year’s Dorset History Network annual forum at the Dorset History centre on 12 November 2016 had a fully packed agenda. Delegates were able to hear about some the recent research and work in archaeology, history buildings, museums in the county, as well the work of some of our members.

Our key note speaker was Michael Hill, architectural historian and
author of two books on Dorset Country Houses. Michael is also working on the updated edition of Pevesner’s Dorset and was able to give us an insight into his ongoing work.

Ciorstadh Hayward Trevarthen, Portable Antiquities Officer introduced us to the new Portable Antiquities database through some of the exciting archaeological finds from Dorset.  Ann Brown helped us see behind the scaffolding at Dorchester’s Shire Hall Project and Katherine Kinrade led us through some of the gems of the Borough of Poole Archive deposited at the Dorset History Centre.

Pam Phillips of the Milton Abbey Local History Group demonstrated the passion for local history from our member groups by describing their fascinating project on the Old Town of Middleton. Read more about the project on their member’s page
